About Redwood Climate Office Hours Event

GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner announced the Redwood Startup Fund , focused on ideation stage climate startups that use the RedwoodJS app framework as a primary component in their stack. As part of the fund launch, we are hosting a panel-style discussion, hosted by Tom Preston-Werner and David Price. Our panelists are investors and climate startup founders who will be sharing their experiences and answering any questions that can help others in their own climate startup journey.

Our Hosts

Tom Preston-Werner is cofounder of Preston-Werner Ventures. Tom started his first business, Gravatar, in 2003 and sold it to Automattic in 2007. Since then he’s created many open source projects that have changed the way developers work and are used in millions of open-and closed-source projects. Tom is also known for cofounding GitHub which was bought by Microsoft in 2018. Tom is currently the cofounder and Chief Product Officer at Chatterbug.

David Price is Developer in Residence at Preston-Werner Ventures, focusing on the alignment of innovation and human flourishing. He supports general initiative and Hypothesis projects with an eye towards technology ethics, team formation, and expansion of product benefits across stakeholders. David has experience across industries as a multi-disciplinary entrepreneur.

Our Panelists

Danny Kennedy is the CEO of New Energy Nexus, connecting entrepreneurs everywhere
to capital to build an abundant clean energy economy that benefits all. New Energy
Nexus is a global platform organization for funds and incubators, with chapters in the
USA, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Uganda, Nigeria and India. He
oversees the CalSEED.fund of $35m for very early-stage companies driving innovation
and building equity in the California economy plus the $12m CalTestBed initiative with
the University of California, Office of the President. He is an adviser to Young Greentech
Entrepreneurs in China with the Asia Society and is Chair of the Board of Third
Derivative, a joint-venture with RMI building the world’s largest climatetech accelerator.
Kennedy co-founded Sungevity in 2007, the company that created remote solar design,
and Powerhouse, an incubator and fund in Oakland, CA. He was the first backer of
Mosaic in 2011, the $3B solar loan provider, and remains on the Board of Powerhive, a
solar mini-utility in Kenya. He was a founding Director of Sunergise, the solar-as-a-
service business out of Fiji and the EnergyLab Australia. He is also a Director of the non-
profit Epic Institute and adviser to the company Solar Philippines. Kennedy authored
Rooftop Revolution: How Solar Power Can Save Our Economy – and Our Planet – from
Dirty Energy in 2012. He has a forthcoming Audible Original podcast with Cate Blanchett
called Climate of Change to be released in April 2022. Prior to being an entrepreneur
and investor, he worked at Greenpeace and other NGOs on climate & energy from 1989.

Paul Seidler is the Managing Director at Evergreen Climate Innovations, where he oversees the organization’s investment activities and portfolio management. Paul has participated in more than 30 transactions totaling nearly $6 million since joining Evergreen in 2014. He has served or is currently serving as a board director or observer for 14 portfolio companies. Paul is also responsible for managing structured fundraising initiatives on behalf of portfolio companies seeking to raise institutional capital. Additionally, he leads Evergreen’s CEO Summit, an annual leadership seminar for portfolio company founders and CEOs. Prior to joining Evergreen, Paul oversaw business development for Applied Thin Films, Inc., an advanced materials company developing ceramic coatings and composites for the energy, aerospace, and defense industries. Paul was recognized by the Midwest Energy News in the “40-Under-40” class of 2017. Since 2014, he has served as a mentor at the Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
